How To Winterise Your Swimming Pool – Here’s How To Do it
Now that we’re in October, it’s coming to that time of year when you need to ‘winterise’ your swimming pool There’s a lot to do so make sure you have a couple of hours spare – preferably on a sunny day.
How To Winterise Your Swimming Pool – Clean Your Solar Cover
When winterising your swimming pool, first you need to clean your solar cover (this is the cover that rolls over the swimming pool to keep the heat in and the leaves out!). Once you’ve done this you then need to roll it up dry, then cover it with plastic (or maybe you have a cover for it). Then put it away in a shed somewhere dry.
How To Winterise Your Swimming Pool – Clean Your Pool Thoroughly
Next you need to clean your pool thoroughly. Get all the debris out – things like leaves, insects etc. Then vacuum the pool to make sure it’s lovely and clean. Then backwash the filter to remove all debris.
How To Winterise Your Swimming Pool – Test The Water Properly
Test the water and adjust the PH to 7.6 and shock the pool with chlorine to 5 parts per million (minimum). It’s fine at this level as nobody will be swimming in the pool for a long time (until next Spring so this high level of chlorine won’t hurt over the winter). Normal chlorine levels to swim in are 2.5 parts per million (max). The shock process is necessary to get rid of the combined chlorine which evaporates during the shock process. Add the winterising chemical (something like Winter Long or Cleaner Winter)
How To Winterise Your Swimming Pool – Fit The Winterising Cover Last
Fit the winter cover. You may find it necessary to remove the ladder and store that one away. Once you’ve fitted the winter cover, for extra protection from falling leaves and debris that might get blown around in the wind, you can weigh the edges of the cover down with sandbags. Alternatively, heavy stones will do. Remove the skimmer baskets and put empty plastic containers in the skimmers to prevent them being damaged by frost expansion. Turn off all plant room equipment and drain down the filter, pump, heater and any low points in the pool pipework.
